Mathematical modeling to standardize times in assembly processes: Application to four case studies

Purpose: This paper proposes model-based standard times estimates, using multiple linear regression, nonlinear optimization, and fuzzy systems in four real cases assembly lines. The work includes a description of the models comparison their performance with values obtained conventional chronometer method. These allow estimating without reconducting field studies.Design/methodology/approach: For development time study, methodology applied by International Labour Organization (ILO) was used as baseline. is structured three phases: selection case registration process direct observation, calculation/estimation time. selected studies belong to lines motorcycles, television sets, printed circuit boards, bicycles.Findings: In motorcycle’s case, study allowed constructing seven regression estimate for assembling front parts, predict rear parts different motorcycle types. Compared classical method, results never exceeded 10%. Regarding TV sets PCBs, considered construction optimization that making appropriate predictions Finally, bicycle line, logic model represent constructed validated.Research limitations/implications: reasons confidentiality information, this omitted names companies, services, manufactured products.Originality/value: literature consulted does not refer representation on mathematical models. these empirical data from actual valuable aid companies involved supporting activity planning.
